Programme includes: Vierne: Messe Solennelle

The Edinburgh University Singers are presenting a concert of French choral and organ music in the church on Wednesday 21st March at 7.30pm. The main work will be Vierne’s spectacular Messe Solennelle, originally written for choir and two organs, and given its first performance in St Sulpice, Paris, in 1900. The programme will include shorter choral pieces, such as Duruflé’s Four motets, Widor’s Tantum ergo, and Villette’s Hymne à la Vierge. Jeremy Cull will also play the Prelude and Fugue in B major by Saint-Saëns.
The Edinburgh University Singers have not visited St Peter’s for many years, and so are much looking forward to this concert, which will also demonstrate the versatility and splendour of the newly-rebuilt organ. There will be a retiring collection.
Good Friday: Friday 6th April: 7.30pm: Concert
Choir of St Peter’s, Rupert Forbes: Conductor, Sheila Robertson: Organ
‘The Seven Last Words of Christ’: Théodore Dubois
On Good Friday, the St Peter’s Choir are performing Dubois’ Sacred Cantata ‘The Seven Last Words of Christ’. Possibly best known for his organ works, Dubois composed this in 1867, and it is frequently performed in France during Lent. Surprisingly, it is not well known in Britain and rarely performed here. Reflecting on the final utterances of Jesus on the cross, the music is bursting with beautiful harmonies, and uses the organ to the full. The concert will last approximately one hour, and a retiring collection will be taken for the Organ Fund.
