Our 2026 Lent Appeal is again supporting the Newington FoodBank+, based just around the corner at the Community Church. After all our services during Lent there will be an opportunity to give financially through a retiring collection towards this very important help to our local community. For those who wish to Gift Aid their donation, Gift Aid envelopes will be available at the back of the church.
With the cost of living continually increasing, it is hard for many, and for those with less, the choices prove to be starker… Donations of non-perishable food and basic toiletries are also gratefully appreciated and can be left at the back of the church. Particularly needed are: sardines, cooking oil, custard, coffee, sugar, biscuits, shampoo and shower gel. More information Newington Food Bank – Community Church Edinburgh
Alongside our regular Sunday services, services during Lent and Easter include:
Ash Wednesday, 18th February , 7.30pm
A reflective and meditative service of Holy Communion to mark the start of Lent. During it, we are reminded that, in our Christian lives, we seek to realise the death of Jesus so that God may be glorified in our worship and through our witness in the world. We are also reminded of our baptism, and how Christ’s death on the cross may clearly be shown in our lives.
We come before God in penitence, reflecting on our life in Christ. We pledge ourselves to observe this season of self-examination, discipline, and self-denial with sincerity, prayer, and reverent reflection on Holy Scripture, seeking God’s purpose for us, and modelling our lives on the example of Christ Jesus.
Palm Sunday, 29th March, 9am (said); 10.45am (with music) Services of Holy Communion celebrating the arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem. It reminds Christians of the wish to welcome Jesus into our hearts, and the willingness to follow him.
Maundy Thursday, 2nd April, 7.30pm: A reflective service of Holy Communion with music, commemorating Jesus’s institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper. Deriving from the Latin word ‘mandatum’ (command), the word ‘Maundy’ reflects on the words Jesus spoke, which are written in John 13: 34; ‘A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you’. It ends in silence with the stripping of the Altar.
Good Friday Meditation, 3rd April Details TBC
Easter Day, 5th April: 9am (said); 10.45am (with music): Services of Holy Communion joyfully celebrating the life the Risen Christ shares with us all.
